At our General Meeting on Tuesday, October 13, American Legion Post 754 had the privilege of hosting an intimate conversation with NYPD Sergeant John T. Moynihan, whose nearly 41 years of service to New York City are matched by his extraordinary commitment to the next generation.
John shared stories from his remarkable career with the NYPD, which began in Washington Heights in 1986 and has included assignments ranging from narcotics and organized crime investigations to his current work with the Joint Terrorism Task Force. His experiences offered our members a unique perspective on law enforcement, public service, and the city he has dedicated his life to protecting.
Perhaps even more meaningful was hearing about John's work beyond the badge. For more than 34 years, he has led the Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Little League in Washington Heights, named in honor of an NYPD officer killed in the line of duty in 1988. Under John's leadership, the league has mentored more than 10,000 children, teaching lessons that extend well beyond baseball. More than 60 former players have gone on to serve as NYPD officers themselves.
The league's motto, "Building Major League Citizens, One Game at a Time," captures the impact John and countless volunteers have made on generations of young New Yorkers.
We are also pleased to share ESPN's award-winning documentary, The Heights, which tells the story of the Buczek Little League and the extraordinary community that has grown around it. We encourage our members to take a few minutes to watch and learn more about this remarkable program.
Our sincere thanks to John for spending the evening with us, sharing his experiences, and reminding us that service takes many forms. His commitment to both the NYPD and the young people of Washington Heights is a wonderful example of what it means to serve a community.
