Girls State is a prestigious, week-long hands-on government and leadership training program for high school juniors held in Brockport, NY and sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary. Participants are divided into two fictitious parties, then campaign for elected offices, draft and debate mock legislation, and run judicial proceedings at the city, county, and state levels.
Those interested in attending Girls State must complete their application by the end of January of their 11th-grade year in high school and attend during the summer between 11th and 12th grade. Attendance counts as points toward service academy applications and is looked upon favorably by most university admissions committees. Attendees are also eligible to apply for the Samsung Scholarship if they are direct descendants of a U.S. citizen whose service qualifies them to join the American Legion. https://empiregirlsstate.org
